Chapter Two - Lost Property

Fay Bennet had almost started to fall asleep waiting outside the campus administration building. It was a large steel building, with glass walls across one side. It also had a large glass awning between itself and the science block. Sat underneath it, the heat magnified like a greenhouse, Fay could have easily dozed off.

Lauren Adam’s last lesson was in the building and Fay was hoping to meet her on her way home. After the previous days events, she was starting to think she’d gone insane.

“Fay?” a voice called out from behind her. She hadn’t noticed the students piling out, in her warm, sun-induced reverie.

“Lauren,” Fay’s eyes snapped open as she saw Lauren standing in front of her, “I was waiting for you!”

“So it would seem,” Lauren eyed her suspiciously.

“It's about yesterday.” Fay began before she was interrupted.

“Nothing happened yesterday.” Lauren glared, daring Fay to challenge the statement.

“Look, it’s vital you come with me. That book was more important than you could ever imagine.” Fay tried.

“I want that book back!” Lauren said, “My Grandfather noticed it was missing. I managed to convince him it was being valued.”

“Look Lauren, you know that something strange happened yesterday. To tell you the truth, for a few seconds we went to another parallel world. It’s important you come with me, and talk to one of my friends who went there with me yesterday!” Fay said earnestly.

“I didn’t go anywhere yesterday. It was heat stroke or something,” Lauren waved a hand at her dismissively. “I don’t know how to say this, that you’ll understand. Go away. Leave me alone. Keep the d**n book!”

“Well, er, actually, I sort of lost the book. I left it in the other-“ Fay was cut off.

“Ah-ah-ah!” Lauren raised her hand. “Not interested. Whatever freaky stuff you get up to is your concern. Just leave well alone, as far as I’m concerned.”

And with that, Lauren stood up promptly, and walked off toward the campus exit. Her entire body exuded irritation and contempt. Fay sighed. This was not her day.

Chris grinned, satisfaction covering his face, as he watched his Chemistry tutor walk away carrying his coursework folder. He’d spent eight weeks perfecting an essay on Fusion, and he’d finally brought everything together.

Now, with a satisfied feeling, he watched his tutor carry the folder containing the class’ coursework out of the chemistry classroom, to deposit it in the college office.

Chris leaned forward for his bag, to pack away his equipment, and his face drained of colour. The last page of his coursework, the evaluation, the key part of the entire essay, was sat at the bottom of his bag.

“Oh, sh- ugar.” He bit his tongue.

Fay was waiting for Chris in the Stiles St Mary park again. It seemed the logical place to meet. Promptly, and with a look on his face that concerned Fay, Chris rounded the corner. He seemed out of breath.

“You look...” Fay sought an adequate word, to soften the blow, “Like you're breathing well?” she tried.

“I have just run... a damn near marathon... to try and get the last page in my coursework, but the... office was locked when I got there.”

“What?” Fay was puzzled.

Chris stopped, inhaled, and explained that before he could stop his Chemistry tutor, the essays had been locked in the College Exams Office.

“So I was thinking,” a devilish smirk besmirched his features, “I can’t get through a locked door, but someone who could say, hop into another dimension, take a few itsy bitsy steps forward, and hop back, could add that last page. We wouldn’t even have to transform into magic pixies,” he paused sarcastically, “Sorry, Guardians.”

“No!” Fay snapped, “Even if it wasn’t a complete misuse of our powers, I don’t want to use them anymore.”

“You’re kidding right?” Chris’ mouth dropped, “We get supercool, superpowers and you don’t want to use them? We have a duty to save the other world!”

“How exactly? What are we supposed to be doing? We don’t even know who we’re fighting, we don’t know where these powers come from, what if they’re evil?” Fay looked terrified.

“Don’t be stupid. I’m sure there’s a perfectly sensible reason that we were given these powers, and if we hang around in Dreamfall for a while longer we might learn why."

“But-“

“No buts!” Chris interjected, “We should at least get the book back. If we don’t take up the Guardians mantle, someone else might.”

He looked at her earnestly.

“At least help me get my coursework sorted, I don’t want to have two years work gone to waste.” he added.

“Fine,” Fay sighed. It was going to be a long night.

Sheravfar was furious. So much so in fact that he’d already burned several guards alive. How could two inept teenagers escape him with powers they’d only just discovered.
Lord Seraphim looked on with interest from his throne, watching as the chief of his armies exercised his power in frustration.

“Instead of taking out your anger on my shadow demon hordes, why don’t you do something about your failure, Sheravfar.” He was growing tired of watching his second wearing a groove in the palace floor. They were inside the throne room, and Sheravfar's movements were almost hypnotic.

“But I lack the power to travel to Gallowmere, Lord. Since the last Traveller sealed all of the portals between Gallowmere and Dreamfall, travel has been impossible.”

Lord Seraphim sighed. A thousand years ago, when the guardians had imprisoned he and his knights, in fear of their powers, the traveller had used her power over space and time to seal the interdimensional portals hidden around Dreamfall, which had once allowed travel between other realms.

“It is quite fortuitous then that the Shadow Beasts have returned to me the pendant of Gorath. It is one of a pair of amulets, fashioned from jewels from the Dreamfall crown, which allows its user to travel across the divide." Seraphim turned his head, "If it so pleases you, you may travel to Gallowmere to exact your vengeance on the Guardians. Provided you return to me the Tome of the Traveller. The volume is powerful, and might increase my powers. At best it will be out of the hands of those ne'er do wells, the Guardians."

Seraphim waved a hand at the air, and a glowing necklace floated over from a plinth at the side of the room. It was a blood red jewel set in a simple silver chain, “Go my servant. Return to me the head of the traveller, on a silver platter.”

Fay cursed in the cold air of the evening. Of all the ways she could spend a Friday night, burgling the college was not on the list. As she pulled her jacket tighter around her torso, Fay breathed in deeply. She and Chris were outside the College Exams Office, next to the back wall. Standing next to her, Chris sighed, and rubbed his hands together. “Ready?”

“Don’t rush me. I don’t even know if I can do this. Last time it happened by-“

Fay was cut off once again by a flash of light, as she and the Guardian of Air dematerialised into the ether. However, they were not unobserved. From the shadow of the trees opposite the wall, Lauren Adam’s eyes widened, and she gasped audibly. Had that really happened to her two days before?

Before she could continue to ponder her experience, a hand wrapped around her mouth, and another restrained her arms.

“Make a sound,” Sheravfar purred, “And you will go from hostage, to corpse.”

Fay breathed in deeply as the two materialised in Dreamfall. Chris cried out in excitement. “Wow, that is so cool!”

“Chris, shut up,” Fay sighed.

“So where are we?” Chris looked around at the small brick room they had ended up in. There was an industrial sound coming from behind the wooden door in front of them.

Stepping forward and opening the door, Chris entered what seemed to be a millroom or granary. There were servants pouring grain into a grindstone apparatus, and more placing dough in a large oven. As the two Gallowmerians entered the bakery, the guards at the top of the stairs spotted them and cried out. “Intruders!”

Servants turned their heads and gasped as they saw the strangely dressed outsiders.

“I know you didn’t want to use your powers again Fay, but either we transform or you get us out of here.” Chris said calmly as the group of guards started running toward them.

“I lose it when I’m stressed, I can’t get us out of here!” Fay cried.

“Then do it.” Chris snapped

Fay cursed, this was the last thing she wanted to do.

“Guardians, unite!” she brought her hands up, as two glowing spheres of energy projected out of her palms, before flying down onto the two.

“The Traveller!” Fay cried,

“Air!” Chris finished.

As the two transformed guardians, each now taller, with a great deal more muscle, elemental robes and delicate wings, floated down onto the ground, Chris grinned up at their approaching opponents.

"Er, why did we say that?" Fay said bemusedly.

"Who knows. It seemed the right thing to say."

His attention returned to the oncoming storm.

“I wouldn’t start with me boys, I’ve had a long day, and the experience might be chilling,” he smirked.

Wings bursting into life, Chris sprang into the air, breathing in deeply. “Air!” he yelled, as he blew out, hard, a cyclone erupting from his breath, blowing the guards back into the wall.

“All right, score one for the air-boy!” he hooted.

“thingyy, much?” Fay cried out to the guardian aloft.

“Get her!” a chorus of voices piped to her left, and she noticed that she had been surrounded. As the two armed soldiers began to run towards her, she sighed.

“This is so ‘Looney Tunes’.” And beating her wings, she jumped upward into the air, with a great deal more grace then the last time she attempted the manoeuvre.

The two armed guards collided, head first, and slid slowly to the floor. Despite her unwillingness to be here, and her incredible disbelief that she was there, Fay couldn’t help but smile as her antiquated technique worked."God, I'll be throwing red sticks of 'acme' dynamite, while they run into concealed ironing boards in a minute."

“You must leave now Guardians!” an elderly washerwoman tried to warn Fay as she landed, “You have come into the granary of Lord Seraphim, the leader of the knights of destruction!”

“Well, in that case, I might as well make myself at home,” she grinned. Flying over to the side of the oven, she gained the attention of the servants in the room.

“Excuse me, oh ‘bakers of bread’, the knights of destruction are about to permanently lose their appetite. I would suggest you all go home.”

Swooping down, avoiding a volley of arrows, in what had started as a small brawl but was now becoming a full out conflict with the ever increasing ranks of guards, Fay grabbed a sack of flour, grunting slightly as she gained height again. She had noticed that when they transformed, she and Chris had grown taller, and gained a great deal of muscle strength and tone. It definitely helped her lift the bag of baking ingredients. “Chris may be the scientist, but I still know what happens when you burn flour.”

Fay taunted, dropping the sack over the fire which heated the oven. Sparks flew into the air as the bag of flour exploded, white clouds and fire erupting like a volcano, their dusty pyroclastic flows an impressive sight to behold. The oven was quickly dismantled, and the millstone was thrown across the room, smashing the wall of the storeroom.

“Hey, stop showing off, you’re supposed to be getting us out of here,” Chris warned, as he waved a hand and a blast of air took over another few soldiers.

“Guardians!” the washerwoman waved quickly, “This way!”

“Thanks,” Fay smiled, as the old woman guided her down a stone tunnel. Chris, after disarming the closest opponents, followed her through the air. Turning around, he sought a way to cover their escape. Before heading down the tunnel, he blew a cyclone in the debris of the room, causing flour and rubble to cascade down from the roof in a shower, blinding the enemy.

“Thank you for fighting the guardians of the realms, we hope you've had a pleasant experience, and will use us for all of your future butt-kicking needs.” said Chris.

Carapar was not pleased. In the absence of Sheravfar, he had to report directly to Lord Seraphim, who did not look kindly on mistakes.

“So Captain, two of the guardians, including the traveller, have broken into my castle and destroyed my granary, and you let them escape?” the scream echoed around the library, its magical sub-harmonics causing shelves of dusty volumes to shake and shudder.

“They appeared so quickly my Lord, there wasn’t time to scramble my forces.”

“Of course they appeared quickly!” Seraphim screamed, his eyes burning bright, causing the room to shake slightly, “The Traveller warps between dimensions! She could breach the stronghold at any time, I told you to stay alert.”

“I shall double the guard in all sections of the fortress my Lord.” Carapar grimaced.

“I will tolerate no more mistakes underling.” Seraphim cursed, “Now, go.” he pointed at the door.

Fay and Chris breathed in deeply as the erupted into the light of day, the tunnel emerging a mile from the castle under a rocky outcrop in a lush green field. The elder came back out from behind them, and bowed slightly. “Guardians, it is an honour.”

“Er, sure. Who are you exactly?” Chris asked.

“I am Valgra. I work with the rebellion. When I saw you warp into the castle alone, I thought you might need help.”

“We did, thank you Valgra.” Fay nodded.

“I must return to the castle, Traveller, lest I be missed.” Valgra knelt before them, before standing again, “We will meet again soon, Guardians.”

“Okay, that was insane,” Fay sighed, lowering her shining palms, as they returned to human form.

“What, the super-cool fight part, or the plan-gone-wrong part?” Chris’ face lit up.

“I swear, I am never letting you talk me into something like this, ever again!” Fay screamed.

“Oh, come on, it was kinda fun.” Chris smirked.

“Sure, I just adore being shot at and viciously attacked. Some of us don’t have powers to defend ourselves mister!” she prodded him in the chest.

“What, that was some nifty flying I saw in there...” he complimented.

She growled, “As soon as I get my zen back, I am taking us home. No arguments. I have had enough of this crazy dimension.”

“Hey, didn’t that woman mention a rebellion? Does that mean there are people in this world working against the knights?” Chris pondered.

“Don’t know, don’t care,” Fay said, in a happily sarcastic tone.

“Look, we can at least get the book back while you figure out how to take us home. The clearing has to be less than two hundred metres away.”

“Fine,” Fay cursed under her breath. Why did she have to get lumbered with Mr Enthusiasm?

“Shall we?” Chris proffered an arm.

“Don’t push your luck.” She walked past him.

It took about fifteen minutes to find the clearing that they’d had their encounter with Sheravfar in. Fay tried to remember which tree she’d hidden the book beneath. As they finally found the oak in question, Chris’ mouth dropped.

“The book, its...”

“Gone.” Said Fay happily, “And is no longer our concern. Next stop, Earth!”

“Actually, that wouldn’t be too bad an idea,” Chris said slowly. Fay looked up and saw the scruffily dressed man clutching the sword to his neck. She couldn’t help but give a quiet scream and stumble back.

“Less screamy, more teleporty,” Chris gasped.

“Who are you two?” The offending stranger asked. He was dressed in flea ridden brown clothes, his face concealed by a tattered bandana.

“We, are out of here,” Fay snapped.

Furrowing her brow, she focused, and to her suprise and delight she felt a familiar rush of energy, like someone walking over her grave, and she disappeared in a haze of golden light.

She jumped for joy as she materialised in the park on Earth.

“Yes, I did it Chris!” Fay opened her eyes and saw... no Chris.

“Oh, hell.” Fay cursed.

“That doesn’t even begin to cover it.” Purred a voice from behind her.

Fay fell to the ground as a sliding leg took her own out from beneath her. The other world inhabitant raised a finger as Fay started to transform.

“Ah, ah, ah. Unless you want a friend of yours to come to harm, I wouldn’t have plans to grow any wings in the near future.”

“What?”

“I believe her name is Lauren Adams...” Sheravfar winked.

Fay stammered, “Lauren? What have you done to her, she’s nothing to do with this...” she lied.

“She made a perfect hostage I’m afraid. Shall we go and say hello?”

The Traveller followed her opponent further into the woods than she’d ventured before, and in the dark of night this placed looked truly menacing. “Will you let her go?” Fay asked.

“That depends on whether you cooperate.” Sheravfar smiled evilly.

“Oh, trust me, you’ll get what you deserve.” Fay muttered.

“I do like a girl with spirit.” He grinned.

As they rounded the next corner, Fay gasped and ran toward Lauren. She was tied to a tree by some sort of glowing, scarlet, energy restraints.

“Let her go!” Fay cried out as she reached Lauren’s side.

“If you cooperate. If you don’t, she leaves without a pulse.”

Fay leaned towards Lauren. “Look, I know you didn’t want to be a part of this, but if you trust me, and we can work together, we can get out of this in one piece.”

Lauren nodded, fear in her eyes. Fay turned toward Sheravfar.

“I’ll tell you this once, friend. Never mess with a guardian’s friends. You might not know who you’re messing with.

Fay tensed, hoping that her suspicions regarding Lauren would be confirmed.

“Guardian’s unite!”

Fay’s heart beat fast as a lilac sphere was joined with an emerald green counterpart, as they projected from her hands. One of them collided with Lauren, shattering the bonds that tied her down. As the purple coloured energy transformed Fay into her guardian attire, the same energy began to equip Lauren with emerald green wings like her own, and a similar dress-robe, but unlike Fay’s, her midriff was covered, and had full length sleeves. Her neckline was exposed, and her dress was held by a dark green bodice.

As the transformation process ended, Fay launched into action, flying forward and pushing Sheravfar into the tree behind him. Lauren looked down at herself and gasped.

“Wow! I’m a friggin’ fairy!” Lauren’s determination to have nothing to do with Fay disappeared, at her incredulity to her current state.

“Technically a guardian,” corrected Fay as she dodged a blast of magic from Sheravfar.

“Wow, I knew you were into some weird stuff, but nothing like this. Can I fly too?” Lauren grinned.

“Sure, and you have the power of earth.” Fay informed her, trying to get Lauren into the fight, “And it would really help if you could use it...”

Chris struggled against the restraints that held him in the chair, as the only light in the room was starting to blind him, a bright lantern on the table before him. Someone was interrogating him from the darkness.

“Who are you? Answer the question, or things will not go well for you my friend.” It threatened.

“Look, I told you, my name is Chris Troughton, I’m a Guardian of the Infinite Dimensions, here to save the universe etc, although I’m not yet sure who from.”

“Oh, of course, you’re a guardian, we should let you go now.” The voice said sarcastically.

“As a matter of fact you should, because I am!” Chris screamed at the shadows.

“You seem to be missing something ‘Guardian’, maybe it’s the wings!”

“Oh, you want proof?” Chris asked.

Since his hands weren’t free, he channelled his power through his mouth. A plume of air projected at the lantern, the strongest blast he could manage without transforming, the oxygen feeding the flame, and it grew in size, illuminating more of the room.

Chris saw a young man, slightly older than himself, who was very attractive, green eyes and dark blue hair, shoulder length. He was holding a sword, but he was open mouthed at Chris’ proof of identity.

"You- you really are a Guardian?" he gasped.

"What gave it away?" Chris glared, "I'm the Guardian of Air. I'm here to supposedley save your world, not get tied up in it!"

As he approached and began to undo the ties that bound his prisoner, Chris tried to hide the blush in his face.

“You have my apologies Guardian of Air,” the warrior knelt, humbly, hands on his sword.

“Ah, no harm done,” He stuttered, “And please, call me Chris.”

The man sat down in a chair opposite him.

“My name is David, and I’m one of the leaders of the rebellion.”

“Someone told us about a rebellion, but I’m not even sure who it’s against.”

“Yes, Valgra sent word that you’d arrived, so we were keeping an eye open for anyone posing as you to get to the resistance. We didn’t expect you to be in human form.”

“Well, if you’re the good guys, I’m glad we met, but you’re going to have to fill me in on what’s been going on in this dimension.”

“You may know that a little over a thousand years ago, the once peaceful land of Dreamfall was invaded by an army led by Lord Seraphim, and his right hand man Sheravfar, and their Lieutenants, the Knights of Destruction. It was thought by many that they had come from another world. They spread across our world like a plague, destroying everything. When they reached this city, Marcuria, the capital of the old world, they fought against the last, great King. Lord Seraphim’s power of shadow defeated our army, and our king. His reign lasted about fifty years, until five teenagers from another dimension came through the great portals of travel, and used elemental powers to defeat Serpahim’s armies, trapping them in the void between worlds. Until about ten years ago, when they broke free and reclaimed their occupation of our world.”

“My forces form the Dreamfall Rebellion, a group who fights to free our world again. We’ve been waiting till the new Guardians would arrive.”

“Well, I guess we’re called the Guardians for a reason. I can’t speak for Fay, but I’ll help you fight your tyrant. But I ought to tell you, we’ve yet to discover who the Fire, Earth and Water guardians are.” Chris admitted.

“They will reveal themselves in time. For now, we must help you. I believe a book came into your possession, the Tome of the Guardians?” David asked.

“It did, but we lost it during a battle with Sheravfar.”

“It has been found by a group of soldiers under Seraphim’s command. I can spare no men, so I’ll need your help to ambush them before they can return it to the castle.”

“I’ll help, but without transforming, my power over air isn’t strong enough to do much good.” Chris looked down, sadly.

“So,” Lauren confirmed, “You’re saying that the reason the ground came up between us and the bad guys in that other world, two days ago, was because I have the power to control earth?”

Fay landed next to her.

“Yes, and if you wouldn’t mind trying it out, I don’t have a power to fight that guy with," She pointed at Sheravfar.

“I’ll try,” Lauren’s brow furrowed.

Raising a hand toward the oncoming Knight, Lauren concentrated, trying to feel the Earth beneath her, becoming in tune with ‘her element’. Lauren gasped as a beam of emerald light shot forth from her hand and struck the ground before Sheravfar. She wobbled slightly along with Fay, as the ground started to shake. Sheravfar cried out as the ground on which he ran started to sink, fast. Before he knew it, he was in a prison pit.

“Wow! That is so cool!” Lauren screamed. For once, Fay was happy about Lauren’s hyperactive nature, as it seemed that she could control her power much better than Chris had at first.

“Argh!” Sheravfar cried, as he somersaulted out of the pit.

“I don’t think it’s over yet.” Fay pointed at him. “Want to try flying now?”

“As if you had to ask,” Lauren smiled.

Lauren flew into the air, and Fay couldn’t help but frown. “How come you’re so good at this already? Chris and I are still getting the hang of it.”

“Must be my charming personality,” Lauren winked, “Now, let’s send magic boy packing.”
Lauren waved her hands forward, and the ground beneath Shervafar shot into the air, catapulting him into the ground.

With another gesture, plants began to burst through the ground, flowering into tall trees that surrounded Sheravfar in a leafy prison.

“I thought you were Earth Guardian, not Plant Guardian...” Fay raised an eyebrow.

“I guess plants come under earth, not quite what I was going for but, hey, it works. Okay, my friend,” Lauren swooped down above the organic restraints containing their foe, “Are you going to give in yet, or do I have to get nasty?”

“Give in? I’m not that desperate!” Sheravfar replied, slicing through the bark holding him back.

“Hey, plantist!” Lauren frowned.

“Can’t have discrimination now, can we?” Fay landed behind Sheravfar and landed a kick in his back, “Now Lauren!”

As Sheravfar stumbled forwards, Lauren’s emerald energy signature grabbed hold of a large boulder and hurled it at Sheravfar, hitting him square in the chest. As he flew backwards he was about to be crushed against the floor when he grabbed a chain around his neck, and vanished in a silver flash.

“d**n it, he got away.” Lauren cursed.

“Don’t worry; I’m sure he’ll be back eventually. He knows that a direct attack won’t work, so he’ll probably come in secret. But that’s tomorrow’s problem. For now, let’s get Chris back.”

Fay put a hand on Lauren’s shoulder and warped them to Dreamfall.

“You think we can stop those guys?” Chris said, in hushed tones, to the handsome rebel beside him.

“If your powers don’t have much of an effect, leave it to me.” David smiled.

“Hey, I can fight too!” Chris protested.

“With those skinny arms?” David teased, before diving out into the road. The small group of soldiers came to a halt, before running forward to attack him.

Chris stepped out onto the dirt track, and pushed his hands forward, but all he could manage was a light draft that made a soldier stumble back a step.

“Okay, plan B,” Chris threw a punch, but stumbled as the guard grabbed his fist and threw him by the arm.

“Chris!” David tried to help him, but two more troops barred his way. “Leave him alone you snakes!”

Chris stumbled backward, as the guard locked a crossbow and pointed it at his head.

“I’ve always wanted to be able to say I killed a Guardian.” The overzealous infantryman pulled the trigger, causing the crossbow bolt to project forward. In the split second after, Chris wondered if his power could change the direction of the projectile, but before he could try, it stopped in mid air, and reverse direction, clanging off the steel helmet of the man holding its parent.

Fay and Lauren landed in front of him.

“Crossbow bolts are made of wood you know, it’s my department,” she winked.

“I see our suspicious were correct Fay.” Chris smiled as he got to his feet. “I have a lot to tell you, but where have you been, it’s been five hours!”

“We had a little encounter with Sheravfar, and then it took ages to find you.”

“I’ve been foraying with the resistance.” Chris raised his eyebrows, grinning. “Now if you wouldn’t mind.”

“Guardian, Unite!” said Fay.

The Golden energy that shot from her hands filled Chris with warmth.

“Air!”

Chris flew over the melee, and spotted the soldiers attacking David.

“Hey, hands off the hunk, you 'Lord of the Rings' rejects!” he conjured a ball of whirling air in his hands, tossing it towards David’s foes.

“Thanks!” He called out, as the guards were tossed into a tree.

Lauren flew into the centre of the fight, and landed between the soldiers, putting her hand on the ground. Concentrating, the entire area occupied by the enemy forces began to rise into the sky. When the plateau had reached just under three metres high, too high for the enemy to jump down from, Lauren flew back to watch her work, giggling to herself.

“First floor, Menswear, Ladies intimate apparel, going up.” She laughed.

“Nice work,” Fay and Chris complimented as they each flew to her side. Chris noticed out of the corner of his eye that David was being corned on the platform, and swooped down, grabbing his rebel ally and lowering him to the ground.

“Thanks Chris. Nice getup by the way.” David smiled, jumping to the ground.

“Why thank you,” Chris bowed in mid air.

“Look out!” David shouted, as a flurry of arrows came from the raised earth.

Flying round in a spiral, Chris began to orbit the platform, growing faster and faster, until he'd created a towering vortex, sucking their opponents weapons off the plateau.

“Well, it looks like our work here is done. For now anyway.” Fay landed by the chest the soldiers had been escorting, taking out the Tome. “I think we should be heading home. We still have to figure out how to save your academic career,” she gestured toward Chris.

“Actually, I think I might be able to assist with that.” Lauren smiled.

The college exams office was quiet, with that eerie silence that all public buildings have during the night. A faint, magical chime could almost be heard in the silence, and after a quick shake, the bricks of the back wall began to rearrange themselves, into a small archway. Chris stepped through, and placed the wayward evaluation in the folder on the desk. Happy, he stepped through the hole, which, with a gesture from Lauren, sealed itself back into shape, not showing any signs of disturbance.

It was just after 1 AM when Fay finally got into the house, her mother awaiting her, arms crossed.

“I thought you said you’d be back by eleven.” She frowned.

“Well, I do have a key,” Fay protested, “You could have gone to bed.”

“Oh, I’m going to bed now. We’ll discuss responsibility and trust in the morning.” Her mother retreated to her room. She hated to be hard on her daughter when she knew what she was going through, but she had no choice.

Fay closed the door and slid onto her bed, sighing. Well, three guardians down, two to go. Unfortunately she had no idea where to look for the Guardians of Water and Fire. Still, the nights events had led her to accept that despite her reservations, she had a duty to fight the growing evil inside dreamfall.

Although, that didn’t mean she had to like it.
